Overview of Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences

Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Academy Medical Sciences (SDFMU)was established in 2019 through the integration of Taishan Medical University, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences,Shandong Provincial Hospital, and Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital. Its origins can be traced back to the first official medical college in Shandong Province -Shandong Provincial Medical Training Institute in 1915. SDFMU is committed to integrating applied and basic medical research with education and clinical services.

Recognized as a key provincial institution, SDFMU is the largest medical research organization in Shandong. In 2020, it was selected as a “University Aiming to Join the Double First-Class initiative” in the Shandong Provincial High-Level University Construction Project. SDFMU operates campuses in Jinan and Tai’an, with research institutes also located in Jinan, Qingdao, and Jining, covering a total area of more than 400 acres.

SDFMU has over 21,000 employees, including staff from its affiliated hospitals. Among them are 3 full-time academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, along with two international academicians.. SDFMU offers a comprehensive talent development system covering bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. It currently enrolls more than 27,000 full-time students, including 21,900 undergraduates, 4,400 postgraduates and more than 700 international students.

Multiple disciplines at SDFMU rank within the top 1% of the ESI global rankings, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavioral science, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, general social sciences, materials science, and engineering. Notably, clinical medicine ranks in the top 0.68‰ worldwide.

A key feature of SDFMU is its Medical Science and Technology Innovation Center, positioning itself as a platform for high-end basic research, wide-caliber translated research and high-quality core facility. This triad accelerates discoveries while training the next generation of physician-scientists. The Innovation Center provides a large-scale shared facility platform with 24-hour online booking, supporting more than 200 research groups and serving as a benchmark nationwide.

SDFMU overseas multiple affiliated hospitals and the number of outpatients exceed 40 million per year. Among them, the Affiliated Provincial Hospital and Affiliated Tumor Hospital rank in the top 100 hospitals in China. Currently, SDFMU is also leading provincial efforts in the prevention and treatment of occupational diseases, skin diseases, parasitic diseases, tumors, radiation protection, blindness prevention, and rare diseases.

As one of the first institutions to receive the Shandong Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students, SDFMU has been enrolling undergraduate and postgraduate students from more than 50 countries and regions—including the United States, South Korea, and India—since 2004, building a strong reputation in international education. It has also established cooperative partnerships with universities, medical institutions, and research centers in over 30 countries and regions worldwide.
