Overview of Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences

Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences (SDFMU) was founded in 2019 through the strategic integration of Taishan Medical University, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, Shandong Provincial Hospital, and Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital. Rooted in a century-long educational heritage, SDFMU traces its earliest origin back to the Shandong Provincial Medical Training Institute established in 1915, the first official medical higher education institution in Shandong Province. SDFMU dedicates itself to the integrated development of medical education, basic and applied medical research, and clinical medical services.

As a key comprehensive medical institution of Shandong Province, SDFMU stands as the largest medical research organization across the province. In 2020, it was officially selected into the Shandong Provincial High-Level University Construction Project as a key university cultivated for national “Double First-Class” Initiative development. SDFMU runs two main campuses in Jinan and Tai’an, together with research institutes distributed in Jinan, Qingdao and Jining, covering a total land area of over 400 acres.

SDFMU boasts a robust talent team of more than 21,000 faculty and staff (including personnel of affiliated hospitals), among whom are 3 full-time academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as 2 foreign academicians. The university has built a complete hierarchical talent training system covering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. It currently hosts 26,929 full-time students, consisting of 21,170 undergraduates, 4,829 postgraduate students and 930 international students.

Eleven disciplines of SDFMU have entered the top 1% of the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) global rankings, namely clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, neuroscience and behavioral science, chemistry, immunology, microbiology, general social sciences, materials science, and engineering. Notably, clinical medicine ranks in the top 0.66‰ worldwide, and Pharmacology & Toxicology ranks within the global top 0.99‰.

A key feature of SDFMU is its Medical Science and Technology Innovation Center, positioning itself as a platform for high-end basic research, wide-caliber translated research and high-quality core facility. This triad accelerates discoveries while training the next generation of physician-scientists. The Innovation Center provides a large-scale shared facility platform with 24-hour online booking, supporting more than 200 research groups and serving as a benchmark nationwide.

SDFMU oversees multiple affiliated tertiary hospitals, which receive over 40 million outpatient visits annually. Among them, Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to SDFMU and Shandong Tumor Hospital Affiliated to SDFMU are ranked among the top 100 hospitals in China. Additionally, SDFMU takes the leading role in Shandong Province in the prevention, control and treatment of occupational diseases, skin diseases, parasitic diseases, tumors, radiation protection, blindness prevention, and rare diseases.

As one of the earliest universities eligible for the Shandong Provincial Government Scholarship for International Students, SDFMU has recruited international undergraduate and postgraduate students since 2004. To date, it has enrolled students from over 50 countries and regions including the United States, South Korea and India, building a solid reputation in international medical education. SDFMU has also established long-term stable cooperative ties with prestigious universities, medical institutions and scientific research centers in more than 40 countries and regions worldwide.
